Why take a coach to the V&A?
Art, Design and Textiles students often come with sketchbooks, portfolios and drawing materials, and adult societies may be carrying shopping from the museum shops at the end of the day. A coach means everything travels with the group, with no Tube stairs, no crowded platforms and no changes.
The V&A also sits in the heart of the South Kensington museums, next to the Natural History Museum and the Science Museum. With a coach, your group can see two museums in one day without worrying about how to get home.
How group coach hire to the V&A works
The London Coach Company is a licensed London coach operator. Our drivers run your trip from pickup to return, and we plan every V&A booking around your group's arrival time and any booked workshops.
You get one point of contact, one fixed quote and one booking. We time your drop-off and pickup closely, so the group isn't kept waiting on the pavement on Cromwell Road, where coaches can only stop for 15 minutes.
Typical V&A bookings:
- Art, Design and Textiles school trip. GCSE and A Level visits to the fashion, textiles, jewellery and design galleries, with pickup from school and a return before the end of the school day.
- Exhibition visit. A booked visit to a major V&A exhibition for a school, college or society, with the drop-off timed to your entry slot.
- South Kensington museums day. The V&A combined with the Natural History Museum or the Science Museum, a few minutes' walk apart, with no coach move needed.
- Adult society day or evening. Decorative arts, fashion and textile societies, U3A and WI groups, including Friday late openings until 22:00.

V&A school visit rules (what teachers need to know)
The V&A's school rules decide how you book, how many adults you need and where you eat, so check them before you book transport.
- Book in advance. Self-guided visits are free for all key stages, but must be booked online in advance through a school account. Accounts are approved within 24 hours, and the V&A doesn't accept bookings from third parties, so schools book their own visit.
- Book a lunchroom slot. Lunchroom slots are added automatically to workshop bookings. Self-guided groups can add one at checkout, and a lunchroom slot also gives access to the lockers in the Learning Centre.
- Check in at the Learning Centre. Groups can use any entrance, but the nearest to the Learning Centre is the step-free Blavatnik Entrance on Exhibition Road. Security may search bags on entry.
-
Adult ratios apply. The V&A asks for one adult
per group of children, by age:
- Ages 0 to 2
- 1:3
- Ages 2 to 3
- 1:4
- Ages 4 to 8
- 1:6
- Ages 9 to 12
- 1:8
- Ages 13 to 15
- 1:10
- Ages 16 to 18
- 1:15
- Cast Courts in small groups. School groups visiting the Cast Courts must go in groups of no more than 10 students at a time.
- Workshops, exhibitions and sketching. The V&A runs curriculum-linked workshops from Key Stage 1 to Key Stage 5, and discounted school rates are available for selected exhibitions. Students are welcome to draw in any gallery using dry materials such as pencils.
- Risk assessments. Teachers must complete their own risk assessment, and the V&A publishes health and safety guidance to help.
What this means for your coach booking: we time your drop-off for your booked arrival and any workshop or exhibition slot, and plan the pickup around your lunchroom time and the end of your visit. Tell us your times, and we'll plan the day around them.
Rules are set by the V&A and can change. Always confirm your booking details on the V&A's schools and colleges visit information page.
Coach access, drop-off and waiting
- Set-down point: one of the two coach drop-off points on Cromwell Road, each allowing up to 15 minutes' waiting time. The V&A has no coach parking.
- Where the coach waits: after drop-off, the coach moves to the coach parking the V&A recommends, in Hyde Park off Bayswater Road, and returns for your agreed pickup time. Any parking charges are included in your quote.
- No engine idling. Leaving an engine running while stationary can be fined by the local council. Our drivers switch off at every stop.
- Busy roads: Cromwell Road is a major route and often congested, especially in school holidays. On the day, your driver confirms the pickup point with the group leader by phone.
- Congestion Charge: the V&A is outside the central London Congestion Charge zone.
- Emissions: coaches and buses over 5 tonnes are subject to the London-wide Low Emission Zone (Euro VI standard), not the ULEZ. Minibuses under 5 tonnes are subject to the ULEZ. All vehicles we supply are LEZ and ULEZ compliant.
Public transport, for anyone meeting the group there: South Kensington Underground station (District, Circle and Piccadilly lines) is a five-minute walk from the V&A, and Gloucester Road is a ten-minute walk.
Accessibility
The V&A's Cromwell Road and Exhibition Road entrances are step-free and wheelchair accessible. Wheelchairs and walking sticks can be borrowed if requested at least 24 hours before the visit. Tell the V&A about any additional access needs when you book.
Wheelchair-accessible vehicles are available by special request. Please tell us about any wheelchair users or mobility requirements when you request a quote, so we can confirm a suitable vehicle for your group.
